Get The Low Down on Vegan Cheese with Charlotte Bates
Good Carma Foods is the venture of Charlotte Bates. Based in Carmarthen (hence the spelling!), they specialise in creating dairy, wheat and gluten free cheese alternatives. This week we caught up with Charlotte to learn more about her business, its products and what she thinks about selling on STDAVIDS.WALES.
Charlotte launched Good Carma Foods in 2013 in honour of her mother, Lynne, who died earlier that year. Charlotte has been a vegan since 2010, and says 'I wanted to help my mother by offering an alternative to dairy cheese without sacrificing flavour but using healthy ingredients as well.' She began developing her vegan Parmesan alternative, starting with farmers markets, and Good Carma Foods is now a limited company with products available from supermarkets and in other parts of Europe!
The products themselves are all free from dairy, wheat and gluten and contain no additives or preservatives. The health benefits to a vegan diet are massive, as all the products contain added vitamin B12, which many vegans struggle to eat enough of. However Charlotte says the products are not just for vegans, and aside from those with nut allergies, they appeal to everyone! They don't compromise on taste, with the Flavour Fusion Original parmesan alternative winning multiple awards, and the Spread Sensation winning a Great Taste award in 2017.
If you're thinking of going dairy free, or even if you're an old hand at a vegan diet and want to try something new, Good Carma Foods alternatives look like a brilliant, versatile way to do it. Recipes recommended by Charlotte include 'Macaroni Cheese' made with Spread Sensation as well as 'Cauliflower Cheese' with Flavour Fusion. The Sweet Potato wedges also look fab - what's not to like?
So what's next for Good Carma Foods? New products are always in the pipeline, and as well as adding new products to the range, Charlotte hopes to export to other countries in the near future.
