The Pembrokeshire Cancer Support Group was established in 1991, by Doreen Wormell. Doreen felt that as a Cancer Sufferer there was a gap between the patient being diagnosed and being able to come to terms with the fact that they have Cancer. Doreen was convinced that the answer was to start a Support Group in Pembrokeshire for those who had Cancer, or have had Cancer and their Carers, Friends and Family. Support came from other sufferers to start a group. Great support also came from Jane Calvert, Stoma and Breast Cancer Nurse at Withybush Hospital and Janet Griffiths, a Macmillan Nurse. The group was charged with the primary purpose of improving and maintaining the quality of life for those who have or have had Cancer and to offer support for their Carers, Family and Friends, through a non nursing environment. For a few years, the group met, twice monthly, on an informal basis at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel in Pembroke Dock. As the group grew they gained recognition from the Local Health Authority for the Services they were providing.
